There seems to be a great hunger in our North American world for that feeling of inspiration. The past year of my life has definitely been full of events that could have shot me off my saddle or kept me on the lead trail. I’m not sure how I’m going to get to my final destination but I know I am pointed in the right direction. I broke my arm in October skate boarding and had to have surgery. Thanks to the help of my friend and trainer, Handsome Bobby Lee, my arm is ok now. It does not stop there. In March my horse died. One day he was ok, the next day he lay in the field dead. I miss that damn horse. He kept my spirit gentle. Then on June 7th, we had a major flood in Southern Indiana. Almost 6 feet of water was in my home. I lost over 300 pieces of art and about every sentimental thing I had. In my case it wasn’t life or death, it was just the loss of memories and the main mechanics of my life and home. We have all seen disasters on TV and in the papers but until it happens to you, you just don’t get it. I waited in FEMA lines, Red Cross lines and filled out enough paper work to test the patience of Job. Now you might be thinking, hey man what does this have to do with Rock & Roll and what does this have to do with The Luckies band. Well if you go back to the beginning of this conversation it started with what I feel is a need for inspiration. A need for the spirit to move you. You see when I was a kid, I listened to the lyrics as well as those great guitar leads and drum solos and most definitely, Tim Bogart on Fender bass. Terry Reid, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Shawn Phillips, Alvin Lee, Woody Guthrie, Arlo Guthrie, Lou Reed with Velvet Underground, Al Cooper, Delbert McClinton, Alberta Adams, David Bromberg, David Wicox, Canned Heat, Brewer & Shipley, Commander Cody, T-Bon Walker, Jimmy Reed, Waylon & Willie, Howlin Wolf, Robert Petway, James Gang, Big Bill Brooney. Man, I could go on and on and on. Do you get where I’m coming from? Music, in my opinion is about the spirit and the inspiration. Music that touches me leaves the ego at home. Music that touches me comes from the heart. The lyrics and melodies seem to keep coming to me. I’m blessed with a band that is filled with the spirit of what I am trying to communicate. Lately the songs lyrically have been about letting go of yourself, letting go of your opinions, letting go of your ego and letting go of your judgment. And I want to tell you that is a big one right there, judgment. Every human being has been conditioned to think and behave in certain ways. We are conditioned genetically as well as by our childhood experiences and our cultural environment. This is not who we are, but this is who we appear to be. When you pronounce judgment upon someone, you confuse those conditioned mind patterns with who they are. To do this is in itself a deeply conditioned and unconscious pattern. You give them a conceptual identity and that false identity becomes a prison not only for the other person but also for yourself. To let go of judgment does not mean that you don’t see what they do. It means that you recognize their behavior as a form of conditioning and you see it and accept it as that. You don’t construct an identity out of it for that person. This liberates you as well as the other person from identification with conditioning, with form, with mind. Then ego no longer runs your relationships. The chorus of one of the bands newest songs sums up where I am at. And if you relate to this, cool. If you think I am full of beans, then forget all that I have said. You are a great friend and I so much enjoy the positive influence you have on the many lives you touch, and the reflective mood I have after visiting with you. Halfway through the year SPIN tipped their hand by offering the 20 Greatest Albums Of 2009 ... So Far. If you remember, the list wasn't in any specific order. Their 40 Best ugg boots store Albums Of 2009 are, and it's interesting to see all the titles that popped up after the last one was published. As well as the albums that missed the cut after Cheap watches
they were spun a bit more: Peter Bjorn And John, Blk Jks, Regina Spektor, Glasvegas, Mavado, and Sa-Ra Creative Partners are nowhere to be found. The list -- one of oh so many lists -- is also refreshingly interesting in and of itself, a fine example of a publication stepping outside of the hive mentality and coming up with something that feels personal. Even if I don't personally agree with a lot of it.
