Following the introduction of Dave Merris and the recording of Crazy, a pattern would emerge in which Merris would come to the studio about once every three weeks or so and the band would record the beds for a couple of new songs. During the intervening weeks all instrumental overdubs and vocals would be added and the next two songs would be prepared for Merris’s return and the subsequent recording of new beds. This meant that only specified individuals would record on a given night. Target Load Blues, Something About a Dream, Kieth, and Reno would be completed by the time the band would be making its first public appearance on February 13th, 2005 as a seven-piece at a Tsunami relief show at The Rathskeller a large gothic castle-like venue in Indianapolis, Indiana. This show would be a turning point for the in many ways. The band brought a significant following to the show and kept its musical promises in the process. The music was readily accepted by other members of the audience as well, thus providing a vital confirmation to the band. By this time it was clear that the assembled group of players was not only recording a full-length CD, but also becoming an actual band as well! This was really a part of the plan, but one never really knows about these things do they? Before things would proceed any further, Doug Firenze and Dave Clingen would part ways with the band. Preferring to play “cover” music, uncertainties about a format of playing only original songs and other various musical issues, the split was inevitable. The band, now a five-piece, returned to the work at hand and recorded beds for an anthem of the heartland-Indiana and the dreamy Slip Away. By early April, with seven songs now in the can, work would begin on the album’s magnum opus- Black and White Thing. The song’s lyrics would be based on Bobbie’s reflection on the state of civil rights in America both past and present. It is very important to note that this session was attended by Mindy Giles, a longtime friend of Mike Fox and David Nay. In addition to being a noted author/music journalist, Mindy previously had served as Vice President of the Chicago-based Alligator Records. Mindy would document her impressions of the band in a wonderfully complimentary piece entitled “The National Conversation.” (Note: this can be viewed in its entirety on the “home page” of www.luckiesband.com By this juncture, the process of introducing new songs and transforming them to a final recorded form had become more cohesive and less time consuming. The piece that would complete the CD was a brand-new song Bobbie introduced as Lonely at the Top. This song, like many other songs by The Luckies, would pay tribute to the band’s many musical influences, in this case a nod to The Who. The Best of What’s New” would contain nine songs of original music recorded between October 2004 and June 2005. The songs would allow the band to acknowledge the impact of their musical heroes such as The Rolling Stones, The Allman Brothers Band, Derek and the Dominoes, Little Feat and The Who to name a few. The making of the CD was married to the creation of the band. Both events would be the result of a group of people coming together with a purpose and making good on a musical promise. Alas, there is more: live shows, the making of a DVD to accompany the CD, and the widening of the creative circle to involve more people.
